About the artwork
The young girl with her eyes closed but her head held high represents strength and resistance. The flowers and leaves symbolize hope and beauty amid struggles. The raw, rough strokes on the warm but bright background highlight the imperfections and hardships faced in times of conflict. These tough times are when people are scared to speak up, afraid of being labeled or made outcasts. Voicing opinions or supporting minorities isn’t the norm, but this young girl, through adverse circumstances, rises and speaks out.
